Pak Kwang-ryong

Pak Kwang-ryong interests me precisely because North Korean footballers so rarely get to test themselves abroad. Born in Pyongyang and listed at 188 centimetres, he plays as a forward, and the simple fact of a striker from one of the world's most closed football systems making a name for himself feels significant to me. I tend to read his career through that lens of scarcity and opportunity. He went from Kigwanch'a in Sinuiju to Switzerland, signing a five-year deal with FC Basel in 2011 and going out on loan to clubs like Bellinzona and Vaduz, and I find myself rooting for the kind of player who has to cross so many borders just to play the game at a higher level.
