My Take
Pankaj Udhas occupies a tender place in my listening. Coming out of Jetpur in Gujarat, he took the ghazal, a form that can feel rarefied, and carried it into living rooms across India without cheapening it. The run from Aahat in 1980 through that Royal Albert Hall concert shows an artist confident enough to be both intimate and grand. What I value is the restraint in his voice; he trusted the lyric and let silence do work. The Padma Shri felt like overdue recognition. His passing in 2024 closed a chapter, but I suspect that warm, melancholy tone will keep finding new ears for a long time.
