Paoli Dam

What draws me to Paoli Dam is the unusual path she took. A postgraduate degree in chemistry, then a leap into Bengali television, where her serial Tithir Atithi ran for six years. That tells me she had real staying power, not just a lucky break. I find regional Indian cinema and television more compelling than the Bollywood machine precisely because performers like her build careers on craft rather than spectacle. Her 2011 film Chatrak even took her to the Cannes Film Festival. She represents a kind of quiet, durable artistry from Kolkata that deserves far more attention outside its own cultural sphere.
