My Take

Patricia Cornwell is genuinely one of those writers who changed an entire genre and I don't think she gets enough credit for it. Before Kay Scarpetta showed up in Postmortem in 1990, forensic science in crime fiction was mostly window dressing — Cornwell made it the engine of the story, and she did it by actually going into the labs, the morgues, the FBI academies. The result swept every major debut award that year, including the Edgar and the Anthony, and then she just kept going — Gold Dagger, French Grand Prix, the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. The Body Farm alone introduced an entire generation of readers to the concept of forensic anthropology. She's also a serious art collector and at one point spent a chunk of her fortune trying to prove that Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper, which is either brilliant or unhinged, and honestly I respect both readings.

Overview

Patricia Cornwell (born Patricia Carroll Daniels; June 9, 1956) is an American crime writer. She is known for her best-selling novels featuring medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, of which the first was inspired by a series of sensational murders in Richmond, Virginia, where most of the stories are set. The plots are notable for their emphasis on forensic science, which has influenced later TV treatments of police work.
