My Take
Pellegrino Matarazzo is one of those quietly fascinating figures in soccer — a New Jersey kid with an Italian surname who went and built a serious coaching career in the Bundesliga before most American fans even knew his name. His run with VfB Stuttgart was genuinely impressive; he took a club that had just been promoted and turned it into a stable top-flight side, playing attractive, pressing-heavy football that earned real respect in Germany. The fact that he eventually landed the Real Sociedad job in La Liga says everything about how seriously European football took him. He's proof that American coaches can thrive at the highest levels of the club game, not just in Major League Soccer, and I find that quietly inspiring.
