My Take
Pete Rock occupies a special place in my appreciation of hip hop. Born in the Bronx and raised in Mount Vernon, he helped define the very sound of 1990s East Coast production. What I love is how he never treats sampling as mere cut-and-paste; he reheats the warmth of soul and jazz into something dusty and alive. Being named alongside DJ Premier and RZA is no exaggeration. He strikes me as the kind of artist who shapes a city's pulse from behind the boards rather than chasing the spotlight, and that quiet authorship is exactly what earns my lasting respect.
