Putter Smith

What I admire about Putter Smith is that he built a life around the most unglamorous chair in the room: the upright bass. Born in 1941, he spent decades anchoring rhythm sections, then went further by teaching and writing about the craft. To me that signals a musician who cares less about the spotlight than about the music itself. His occasional turns as a film actor only add to the texture, but the heart of his story is durability and service. I have a soft spot for artists who hold everything together from behind, and Smith strikes me as exactly that kind of quiet pillar.
