My Take

What fascinates me most about Tarantino is that he proves obsession can be a legitimate artistic method. He never studied at a prestigious film school; he absorbed thousands of movies and turned that encyclopedic love into a style nobody can imitate. The dialogue is his real weapon — those long, meandering conversations that make the sudden violence land twice as hard. Two Academy Awards for screenwriting confirm what I have always believed: he is a writer first and a stylist second. I even find his constant talk of retirement oddly moving, as if he wants cinema itself to end on his own terms. Few directors love the medium this nakedly.
