My Take
Regina Spektor is one of those artists I file under genuinely singular. Moscow-born, raised in New York, she came up through the East Village anti-folk scene before signing with Sire in 2004, and you can hear that scrappy, self-made origin in how unconventional her songwriting feels. What I admire most is that she's primarily a pianist who writes like a storyteller, full of odd vocal tics and sudden shifts that shouldn't work but do. Plenty of singer-songwriters chase polish; she seems more interested in character and surprise. That's a harder, braver path, and it's why her music has aged better than a lot of her contemporaries'.
