My Take

To me, René Goscinny is one of the people who proved comics could be literature without losing a single laugh. Asterix, Lucky Luke and Le Petit Nicolas all manage the near-impossible trick of delighting children and adults at the same instant. I suspect his rootless childhood, born in France, raised in Argentina, a stint in the United States, is exactly what gave his humor its border-crossing universality. Losing him at 51 still feels like a theft. Every award he collected was, in the end, a medal for laughter, and I think that legacy only grows.
