Richard Bona

Richard Bona is a name I'd happily put in front of anyone who thinks bass is just a supporting instrument. A Cameroonian multi-instrumentalist and singer, he turns the bass into a lead voice, threading African melody through jazz with a lightness that never feels academic. What draws me in is how singable his playing is; you can hum lines that most bassists would bury. I think of him as proof that virtuosity and warmth aren't opposites. When a musician makes complex harmony feel like a casual conversation, I tend to trust their taste completely, and Bona earns that trust for me.
