My Take
Honestly, a rugby player from Kyoto is not the combination I would have pictured — Kyoto gives me temples and matcha and quiet streets, not guys tackling each other at full speed. But here's Rikiya Matsuda, born in 1994, now right in that prime early-thirties window where rugby players are at their sharpest and most battle-hardened. He has played fly-half for Japan and was picked for the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad, and now plays for Toyota Verblitz, yet he still puts himself out there on social media with his own voice, and I respect that in a professional athlete. A Kyoto kid who chose the roughest game going — I find that quietly compelling.
