Rina Aiuchi

Rina Aiuchi is from Higashiosaka, which I admit buys her goodwill from me before a note is played. Born Rikako Kakiuchi in 1980, she won the first Super Starlight Contest and the Giza Studio deal that came with it, and from there she refused to stay in one lane: singer, lyricist writing her own words, model, businesswoman, and for a stretch she worked under the single letter R. Changing your name mid career is rarely a marketing whim. It usually means something got hard and you decided to keep going anyway. Most listeners know her for It's crazy for you, but what I like is the push in her voice. In an era of Japanese pop built on softness, she sang straight at you. She quit music in 2010, built a dog-clothing brand, and then came back to singing anyway.
