My Take

Robby Krieger is, to me, the thinking person's guitar hero. He wrote or co-wrote a stunning share of the Doors' catalog, including Light My Fire, which is remarkable for a guitarist rather than the frontman. His flamenco background bleeds into everything, giving his lines that fluid, slithering quality you cannot mistake for anyone else. I admire that he served the song rather than chasing flash, weaving around Morrison's vocals instead of fighting them. And the fact that he is still playing into his late seventies seals it. I have a real soft spot for lifelong musicians who treat the instrument as a craft, not a costume.
