Robert Shakespeare

To me, Robbie Shakespeare is the kind of artist I treasure most: the one who built the foundation everyone else stood on. As half of Sly and Robbie, his bass didn't just play notes, it defined the gravity of reggae and shaped countless records from underneath. I admire how restlessly he embraced electronics and production tricks rather than coasting on a signature groove. Frontmen get the spotlight, but it's craftsmen like him who quietly rewire how a whole genre sounds. He passed in 2021, yet that low end still throbs through speakers worldwide, and I find that quietly immortal.
