My Take

Robert Zemeckis gets filed under crowd-pleaser, and I think that label undersells one of cinema's great experimentalists. Every era of his work bets the whole movie on a technical gamble — animation sharing frames with actors in Roger Rabbit, a hero inserted into historical footage in Forrest Gump, full motion-capture in The Polar Express. Back to the Future remains one of the most perfectly constructed screenplays Hollywood has ever produced, and his 1995 Oscar was thoroughly earned. Even his misfires are failures of ambition, never laziness. A Chicago kid who kept asking what the camera could do next — that is real auteurism.
