My Take
Rod Steiger is, for my money, one of the most electric actors America ever produced. A New Yorker and a true disciple of method acting, he disappeared so completely into volatile, offbeat roles that he reportedly clashed with directors and co-stars along the way. I read those clashes not as ego but as total commitment. From On the Waterfront to his Oscar-winning turn in In the Heat of the Night, plus a Golden Globe and a Silver Bear, his trophy case matched his intensity. He passed in 2002, but that smoldering presence still crackles on film. They genuinely don't make them like this anymore.
