My Take
Roger Deakins is, plainly, one of the greatest cinematographers cinema has produced, and I do not think that is an exaggeration. The way he lit Blade Runner 2049 and finally won an Oscar for it, after years of nominations, felt like overdue justice. His 1917 work, that long-take illusion of continuous war, is technically staggering yet never showy for its own sake. Five BAFTA wins and two Academy Awards back this up. What I love is his restraint. He serves the story rather than his own ego, and that discipline is why directors from the Coens to Villeneuve keep coming back to this Englishman from Torquay.
