My Take
Ron McClure earns my deep respect simply for endurance. Born in New Haven in 1941 and still working the upright bass into his eighties, he has spent a lifetime in jazz's least flashy and most essential chair. The bass is the floor everything else stands on; without it the whole band turns to jelly. That he composes too, and has anchored countless sessions across the decades, makes me appreciate the quiet labor behind so much music I love. There is a Scorpio-like tenacity to holding the low end year after year. Lifelong players who never chase trends are, to me, the coolest of all.
