My Take

I genuinely think Rowan Atkinson is one of the most physically gifted comedians who ever lived, and I don't say that lightly. The man studied electrical engineering at Newcastle University and then proceeded to build a career on rubber-faced silence — Mr. Bean barely speaks a word and yet somehow communicates more than most actors do with full scripts. What gets me is the range: Blackadder's biting, sarcastic wit is almost the polar opposite of Bean's childlike bewilderment, and he nails both. Winning the Laurence Olivier Award in 1981 for Best Comedy Performance before he was even thirty tells you everything. The Johnny English films are silly fun, but don't sleep on his live stand-up work — the physical precision there is something genuinely rare and worth tracking down.
