My Take
Roxanne Shanté feels, to me, like living hip-hop history. Coming up in Queens, she made her name as a teenager in the legendary Roxanne Wars and ran with the Juice Crew through the 1980s, an era when female rappers were still a rarity. What I respect most is the sheer nerve it took to break into that scene armed with nothing but wit and razor-sharp lyricism. Having her life dramatized in the 2017 film Roxanne Roxanne only underlines her significance. So much of today's vibrant rap culture rests on pioneers like her, and I count her among the genuine trailblazers.
