My Take

Royston Drenthe is one of those players I find genuinely compelling, flaws and all. A Rotterdam kid out of Feyenoord's academy who earned a Real Madrid move at twenty carried enormous expectation, and at just 168 cm he attacked the left flank with a fearless mix of pace and power. The career that followed was turbulent rather than linear, but I've always had a soft spot for mercurial talents who burn bright in flashes. The Bernabeu rarely gambles on teenagers without reason. Whatever the ups and downs, the raw ability was unmistakable, and that is what I remember.
