My Take

Ruben de la Red is a name that stirs real feeling for me, because his story is bigger than his stats. A Madrid-born midfielder who came through Real Madrid's system, he had the talent to play for Spain, and then a cardiac scare during a match forced him to retire heartbreakingly early. That kind of forced goodbye always hits hard. He didn't vanish, though, moving into coaching and staying close to the game he loved. At 186 cm he had the frame and the vision, and I often wonder what his peak years might have looked like. To me he's a reminder that careers aren't only measured in trophies.
