My Take

Ryan Adams is one of those artists I genuinely can't quit — the guy from Jacksonville, North Carolina who helped put alt-country on the map with Whiskeytown and then completely reinvented himself as a solo act. Heartbreaker from 2000 is just devastating in the best possible way, and the fact that he followed it up with Gold in 2001 and then kept pumping out records at a pace that would exhaust a normal human being is either inspiring or slightly alarming depending on your mood. Thirty solo albums is not a typo. His voice carries this raw, weathered ache that makes even throwaway songs feel like they mean something, and when he's firing on all cylinders — like on Demolition or Jacksonville City Nights — there's nobody quite like him in American rock.
