Ryosuke Kikuchi

Ryosuke Kikuchi holds the Japanese professional records for a second baseman in assists in a season (535), single-season fielding percentage (a perfect 1.000) and consecutive errorless chances (569). Read those three together and a portrait appears: not a man who makes a spectacular play now and then, but one who makes them constantly and then declines to make mistakes. Born in Higashiyamato, Tokyo in 1990 and listed at 171 cm, he has spent his career at second base for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. His signature is the diving stop followed by a throw released from a body position that should not allow a throw at all. He is rarely the story on offence, and I would argue that misses the point. A pitcher who trusts the middle of his infield throws differently: more strikes, less nibbling. Defence that reliable changes the game upstream.
