Ryōto Kita

Ryoto Kita, born October 2002 in Kobe, is an outfielder for the Orix Buffaloes — a Hyogo kid playing for the Hyogo team, which is a small pleasure in an era when players get shuffled around wherever the contract lands. He came out of Akashi Shogyo High School, went to Orix in the third round of the 2020 draft, and made his first-team debut in 2021; he is married to the professional golfer Karen Tsuruoka. Outfield is one of the deepest positions in Japanese pro baseball; a cold couple of months and there is a younger prospect breathing down your neck. Kita has to play that game in front of a hometown crowd that recognises his face at the supermarket, which cuts both ways — the support is real, and so is the scrutiny. Some players are hardened by that and some are crushed by it. I genuinely do not know which he will be, and that is the honest reason to keep watching. He is still in his early twenties.
