My Take
Sam Mendes is my favorite kind of director: a theatre craftsman who never lets cinema's toys distract him from actors. Winning the Academy Award for Best Director with a debut film should be impossible, yet what impresses me more is everything after, from the discipline of his Bond work to the nerve of staging a war film as one continuous breath. The Cambridge-trained stage background shows in how patiently he builds tension inside a single room. Knighted in 2020 and garlanded everywhere, he still feels underrated to me, because his technique hides itself. The flashier the shot, the more human the moment underneath.
