My Take

Sam Totman is one of those guitarists I file under 'serious players hiding behind a sense of humor.' As the main songwriter and guitarist of DragonForce, he helped define a kind of hyper-fast, almost absurdly over-the-top power metal that you either love or find ridiculous. I lean toward loving it. The British-born, New Zealand-raised path is a nice reminder that this scene was always more international than people assume. What I appreciate most is the craft under the speed; you don't write those riffs by accident. He clearly knows exactly how silly and how skilled he's being.
