Sam Underhill

Sam Underhill has one of those gloriously tangled modern sporting biographies that I find irresistible: born in Dayton, Ohio, yet a flanker for England. At 186 cm he is not the biggest man on the pitch, which makes his reputation for low, brutal, ball-stopping tackles all the more impressive, this is a player who earns his place through ferocity and timing rather than sheer size. The breakdown is thankless, punishing work, and the people who excel there are the unsung engines of any pack. I have a real fondness for these defensive grinders, and Underhill is a fine example.
