Sandayū Dokumamushi

Trace this career and it stops making sense in the best possible way. He was Arashi in the original Ultraman, and then he became one of the most recognizable voices on Japanese radio by insulting his own listeners, greeting old women and old men with mock abuse, on air since 1969. He also swapped his birth name, Iyoshi Ishii, for a stage name built on the word for a venomous pit viper, announcing the act before he spoke. Rudeness by itself does not survive fifty years on air. It survives because the affection underneath is unmistakable, which is why the people he insults laugh hardest. Special-effects television gave him a face, voice work gave him a craft, radio gave him strangers to talk to. Born in 1936, he is ninety now, and at some point the life became the routine.
