Scott Emerson is the kind of baseball lifer I have real affection for. A former pitcher out of Baltimore who came up through Shadow Mountain High and Scottsdale Community College, he found his fullest purpose after his playing days, serving as pitching coach for MLB's Athletics. Turning hard-won mound knowledge into language a young pitcher can actually use is one of the most underrated skills in the game. There's a Capricorn steadiness to the way he quietly shapes a staff year after year. I'll always save my loudest applause for the unsung craftsmen working in the dugout shadows.
