My Take
Seven Olympic Games. Four Winter, three Summer, in speed skating and track cycling — two sports that ask nearly opposite things of a body. When I first read that line about Seiko Hashimoto, I assumed it was a transcription error. It is not. Between 1984 and 1996 she kept showing up, switching seasons, rebuilding herself for a different discipline and then doing it again. Most athletes get one window; she pried open several. What I find harder to process is the overlap. She was elected to the House of Councillors in 1995 and went on competing, riding in the 1996 Atlanta Games as a sitting legislator. She later ran the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, received the Gold Olympic Order in 2021, and in 2025 became the first woman to lead the Japanese Olympic Committee. Doing two demanding jobs at once, publicly, takes a kind of nerve the medal count does not capture. That, more than the statistics, is what I take from her record.
