Seiya Matsubara

Seiya Matsubara, born in Osaka in 1995, is listed at 173 cm, which in professional baseball terms means he was never going to win anyone over on physical presence alone. He played the outfield for the Yomiuri Giants and then the Saitama Seibu Lions until he retired after the 2025 season. Players built like this survive on legs, instincts and the first step after contact, and those are exactly the skills that do not show up when someone glances at a stat line. Power hitters get remembered by numbers. Everyone else has to be watched. I have a soft spot for this category of professional athlete, the ones whose value is obvious in the stadium and invisible on a spreadsheet. A change of team is often framed as a setback for a young player, but it can just as easily mean a different organization looked at the same skills and wanted them. That is not a demotion. It is a second reading of the same player. Since retiring he has coached at the Giants' youth academy.
