My Take
Sergei Roldugin is a genuinely accomplished cellist and conductor, decorated as a People's Artist of Russia, and on pure musicianship I would happily listen to him. But his story is impossible to separate from his close friendship with Vladimir Putin and the offshore and money-laundering allegations that followed, leading to EU sanctions after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. I find him a deeply uncomfortable figure to assess. The artistry may be real, yet when talent appears entangled with power and opaque wealth, the music alone cannot settle the question of how we should regard the man.
