My Take
To me, Sérgio Mendes is the sound of summer arriving. What I admire most isn't the Grammys or the Brazilian honors, deserved as they were, but how he kept bossa nova feeling effortless while sneaking real funk and groove underneath. Brasil '66 made Brazilian music a global passport without ever sounding watered down. Working into his eighties with that same warmth says everything about the man. His passing in 2024 closed a remarkable run, yet put on one of his records and the room instantly brightens. That, to me, is a rare and generous kind of artistry.
