Shane Black is one of my favorite craftsmen of mainstream Hollywood entertainment. Originating the Lethal Weapon franchise would be a career's worth of impact on its own, but his fingerprint goes deeper than that. What I love is his command of tone, the way he laces tense action with sharp, wisecracking humor that feels effortless but is fiendishly hard to write. From The Last Boy Scout to The Long Kiss Goodnight, his dialogue crackles. That he also directs and acts only underscores his versatility. Beneath the spectacle there is always a streak of human messiness, and that is what makes his work stick with me.
