My Take
Shimon Takayama is one of those athletes where the name hits you before anything else — "Shimon" has this quiet gravity to it that just fits a guy who made basketball his whole identity. Born in 1990 and forged at Tokai University, one of Japan's serious sports powerhouses, he won a national college title as vice-captain, turned pro with Earthfriends Tokyo Z as the club itself went pro, and was the only one of three B.League players to pass the first cut at a 2016 NBA Development League tryout. And honestly? That grind makes me respect the craft even more. Not every athlete needs to be a brand. I get the sense he let the work speak, which in today's oversharing world feels almost radical.
