Shinobu Kandori

Shinobu Kandori has one of the strangest and most convincing résumés in Japanese public life: judoka, professional wrestler, then member of the House of Councillors. Born in Yokohama in 1964, she came up through women's puroresu in an era when the sport's physicality was genuinely brutal and the line between work and shoot could get uncomfortably thin. Fighters from that world tend to carry a kind of earned bluntness, and I suspect that is exactly what made the leap into politics viable. Her entry to the upper house is worth noting for how unglamorous it was — she lost her 2004 run and only took a seat in 2006 as a replacement after Heizo Takenaka resigned. That is not a triumphant story, it is a persistence story, and persistence stories are usually the truer ones. What I take from her is a simple point: physical courage and political staying power draw from the same well. You keep getting up.
