My Take

Shira Haas is one of the most quietly astonishing screen actors I have watched in years. Her turn in Unorthodox made her the first Israeli actress nominated for a Primetime Emmy, and watching her work you understand why, she can carry a scene with a single look. At just 151 centimeters she is physically tiny yet commands enormous presence, and her training at Thelma Yellin clearly gave her a rock-solid foundation. The arc from local acclaim on Shtisel to global recognition feels earned rather than hyped. I deeply admire the steel beneath that delicate frame, and I expect her best work is still ahead.

Her international breakthrough came with her portrayal of Esther "Esty" Shapiro in the Netflix miniseries Unorthodox (2020), for which she received Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations, becoming the first Israeli actress to be nominated for the latter.
