Shirley Bassey

To me, Shirley Bassey's voice is practically its own instrument — a force of nature out of Cardiff's Tiger Bay, born in 1937 and on stage by her teens. She remains the only artist to sing more than one official James Bond theme, and that Goldfinger belt still raises the hair on your arms. Dame, Legion of Honour, a Companion of Honour past eighty: the honours simply confirm what longevity already proves. In a business that chews through fashions, staying at the center for decades takes more than talent. She has my unreserved admiration.
