Shōma Fujihira

Shoma Fujihira was born in 1998 in Futtsu, Chiba, came out of Yokohama High School — one of Japan's great baseball factories — and went straight into professional ball as a pitcher for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. He stands 185 cm, which in the Japanese game is genuinely large for a right-hander. Here is the thing I keep in mind with players like him. The high-school power arm who arrives with hype is the most romanticized figure in Japanese baseball and also the one least likely to follow the script. Velocity is bought with wear, and the same body that makes an eighteen-year-old exciting is the body that spends its twenties negotiating with its own elbow and shoulder. Simply staying on a top-team roster for several seasons is an achievement that fans rarely count as one. So I try not to grade this kind of career on the original timetable. As long as a pitcher still has a handful of days a year where the stuff is genuinely good, the story is not finished being written.
