My Take
Shunji Kono is the kind of politician who actually went the long way around to earn his seat. Born in Kure, Hiroshima, he ground through Tokyo University's law faculty, spent time inside the old Ministry of Home Affairs, did a stint at Harvard Law School, and then quietly worked his way through prefectural roles until he landed as Miyazaki's Vice-Governor. When the governor's seat opened up in 2011 he ran as an independent and won decisively — and has kept winning, now into his fourth term. What strikes me is the sheer consistency: no big national profile, no scandal-driven fame, just a career bureaucrat who bet on one prefecture and kept delivering enough to stay trusted. Miyazaki isn't a flashy posting. The guy clearly just likes the work.
