My Take
Shuto Sakurai was born in Tokorozawa, Saitama in 1999 — still well in his mid-twenties as of 2024, which means he's right in that window where a baseball player is either starting to realize his potential or quietly grinding his way toward it. Nihon University Third High School is no joke when it comes to baseball; it's the kind of program that chews through lazy habits and spits out players who've actually earned their calluses. Standing at 178 cm, he's got a clean build for the sport — not a hulking slugger type, more like someone you'd expect to have solid mechanics and a compete-every-at-bat mentality. From DeNA to Rakuten to Taiwan and now Shanghai, the story of a Saitama kid who came through a serious high school baseball program and just kept going is one I find myself rooting for. Some guys just feel like they belong on a diamond, and Sakurai reads that way to me.
