My Take

I'm drawn to Silvio Proto for the position he chose: goalkeeper, the loneliest and most thankless job on the pitch. Coming out of Charleroi, a hard-edged industrial town in Belgium's Hainaut, and carrying an Italian immigrant name, he stood 184 cm at the last line of defense, where one mistake gets remembered and a hundred saves get forgotten. I've always preferred the players who guard the back over the ones chasing glory up front. Proto's steady, unglamorous reliability is exactly the kind of professionalism I want to applaud quietly. He spent a career absorbing pressure so his teammates didn't have to.
