Slim Pickens

Slim Pickens is the kind of name that makes any film buff grin. A genuine California rodeo rider turned actor, he brought an authenticity to his cowboy roles that no drama school could ever manufacture. His ride atop the falling bomb in Dr. Strangelove is permanently etched into cinema history, a single image that outlives most careers. Born Louis Burton Lindley and later inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame, he was the real article. I treasure performers whose own biography seasons their work, and Pickens carried the unmistakable scent of the true West.
