My Take
Sonny Bono fascinates me because he refused to stay in one lane. Half of Sonny & Cher and a genuine hitmaker, he could have coasted on nostalgia forever. Instead he reinvented himself as mayor of Palm Springs and then a U.S. congressman, succeeding in two arenas that rarely forgive outsiders. I think his underrated gift was likability — the same warmth that sold records also won votes. His sudden death in 1998 cut the story short, but to me he remains proof that a second act can be just as real as the first, if you have the nerve to attempt it.
Overview
Salvatore Phillip "Sonny" Bono ( BOH-noh; February 16, 1935 – January 5, 1998) was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, and politician. In partnership with his second wife, Cher, he formed the singing duo Sonny & Cher. A member of the Republican Party, Bono served as the 16th mayor of Palm Springs, California, from 1988 to 1992, and served as the U.S.
