Soulja Boy

Soulja Boy deserves more credit as a pioneer than the jokes suggest. As a Chicago-born teenager, he uploaded his own music to the internet and rode "Crank That" all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with no industry machine behind him. In 2007 that was genuinely visionary, a blueprint for the self-made, internet-native artist that everyone now takes for granted. Beyond the one inescapable hit, he produces, acts, and keeps reinventing himself. What I find compelling is his sheer durability: criticized constantly, he never stops working or talking, and that restless energy is impossible to dismiss.
