Soumaya Akaaboune

Soumaya Akaaboune intrigues me precisely because she resists a single label. A Moroccan actress born in Tangier who also moves as a dancer and works as a businessperson sounds like someone who has built a life across cultures and disciplines. Spotted at fourteen by the choreographer Maurice Béjart, she toured Europe with his troupe, then turned to musical theatre in London after snapping her Achilles tendon in 1989 ended her dancing career. I find myself rooting for performers who turn a setback like that into a new path.
