My Take
I keep coming back to how Stefanie Sun arrived seemingly out of nowhere in 2000 with the album Yan Zi and just owned the Mandopop conversation. Selling well over 300,000 copies in Taiwan as a debut is the kind of number that doesn't repeat. What I respect most is the girl-next-door restraint of her ballads at a time when bigger and flashier was the formula. She's Singaporean, a Nanyang Technological University graduate, and never felt manufactured. When she pulled back from the spotlight, the fact that fans simply waited tells me her voice meant something real, not just a passing trend.
