My Take

Steve Vai rewired what I thought a guitar could do. Plucked out of obscurity in his teens to transcribe Frank Zappa's impossible scores, then schooled at Berklee, he turned virtuosity into something stranger and more spiritual than mere speed. Across eleven solo albums and multiple Grammys, the technique is staggering, but it is the playfulness and the prayer-like melodies that hook me. Lumping him in with shredders misses the point entirely. Vai tells stories in sound, conjuring whole emotional landscapes from six strings. He is, to my ears, less a guitarist than a working magician.
